TENS Therapy (Transcutaneous Electrical Stimulation)
What is TENS Therapy?
Transcutaneous Electrical Stimulation (often referred to as TENS) is a non-invasive form of electrical energy therapy that sends various waveforms to nerves via electrodes or patches placed on the skin.
Why choose TENS Therapy?
TENS therapy can be used to assist rehabilitation treatments for a wide range of acute or chronic painful conditions to help:-
Promote pain relief
Promote healing and circulation
Improve sleep patterns
Enhance range of motion and function
Reduce the use of pain relievers or other analgesic drugs.
Reduce muscle soreness/tension or spasm
TENS Therapy may also be used as a way to help manage overuse injuries, inflammatory and neuropathy (nerve pain) conditions. Patients with painful soft tissue injuries (e.g. strains or sprains) may also benefit from TENS therapy during rehabilitation.
How it works
TENS machines are used as a way to help reduce or override signals from the nerves to the spinal cord and brain. This is done by the therapist adjusting the pulse, frequency and intensity produced by the electrical impulse the TENS machine creates. Although the exact mechanisms on how TENS Therapy works is still unclear. It is suggested that the waveforms produced from the TENS machine may help alter the painful messages either by blocking or by reducing the pathways of pain. Other research suggests that it may work by promoting the stimulation of natural pain relieving chemicals (endorphins) and other substances to help with pain relief to assist the body to heal itself.

How does it feel?
Once the electrodes are in place patients often feel a strong tingling or thumbing sensation however this is quite normal and comfortable experience.
Is TENS Therapy suitable for me?
We advise patients to seek medical advice for TENS Therapy suitability if they have or suffer from the following:-
If you suffer with a reduced skin sensation complaint or have a loss of sensation we advise that you speak to your GP or physician before receiving TENS Therapy.
Patients that have heart problems or a cardiac pacemaker should not use TENS Therapy without their physician’s approval as the electrical signals from the TENS Therapy may interfere with their heart or pacemaker.
Have a metal or other electrical implant device
Suffer with epilepsy
If you have Alzheimer’s Disease, dementia, or other cognitive problems
If your pregnant or think you may be pregnant as TENS Therapy may not be recommended during early pregnancy
Occasionally some patients may be sensitive to the pads in which the skin may become irritated or red. If you suffer with allergies we can provide special pads on request.
